Alberto Ruiz de Samaniego /// V
/ W or Virilio's War.
V/W
It could be, for example, Life*, or the Visible, facing its replications,
representations, doubles, and reflections (W): the
repetitive cancer that smothers and annuls it, changing it into some
thinned-out material, spread over monitors, plasma screens, viewing
machines (ah, the perceptron!) and binary codes. A world in amnesia,
yet in constant self-transmission and expansion, fighting off all
(present) manifestations of life. A world of blindness, too, for
we no longer see things; this is done for us by "viewing machines"– the
product of our looking without seeing; (the perceptron is precisely
the regulatory ideal of our futuren – perhaps already present – ways
of seeing). A blindness which has become the latest form of industrialization:
the industrialization of non-sight. Serial vision: W.
The effect of the numerous technological protheses of sight, which
have come to the aid of our tired – or strained – eyes. These are
our times. Times of a world at war, as always. The War of the World,
like the same old film, but set now. Now that we have stripped the
world to a thin filmstrip, to a plate on which images flicker past,
or – worse still – to a mere surface for the ejection of
light particles and ciphered numbers... Era of generalised simulation,
or integral dissimulation, in view of the discredit of territorial
space and the artifice of a regime of false temporality. Thus V/W could
also signify the confrontation of the old Truth* (and its familiar
true / false dichotomy) with the complex, sybilline and blurred terrain
of the potential, the virtual, the different possibles and doubles (W) which
have become our times' correlative of so-called objectivity. |
