The new Contemporary Art Museum of Naples –Madre– is inaugurating a large retrospective of almost five decades of work with your active involvement.

Individual exhibitions are a new phenomenon. The first of a living artist was held, I think, some time in the 1920s or 1930s. There was a change in the painter's importance. He started to present himself on a different plane. A little like the literary figures of the 19th century. Individual exhibitions have a dramatic effectiveness. For this reason, they need to have a reason for being. At least those held by painters. There should be a motive for assembling all these things. It is not to commemorate or demonstrate one's own bravery (excellence). The motive is to present a drama with precise objectives. The show we are mounting is an attempt to produce a 'unique act' something which, at least at the present moment, is not divisible.
